A Dutch doctor who was reprimanded for administering a lethal injection to an elderly woman with dementia despite her ‘resistance’ is now under a criminal investigation.
An inquiry into the 74-year-old woman’s death revealed that the woman, who had Alzheimer’s, was surreptitiously given a coffee containing a sedative, and then had to be held down by her family as she appeared to struggle against the injection.
The chief public prosecutor at The Hague is investigating whether there are grounds for criminal charges to be laid against the doctor, whose name has not been publicly released.
It could lead to the first ever prosecution of a doctor over the treatment of a patient under the Netherlands’ euthanasia laws.

The doctor at a nursing home in the Netherlands, where euthanasia is legal, was investigated following the death of the unnamed woman who had expressed a wish to die “when the time was right”.
The Catholic News Agency reported that the woman woke up despite the sleep-inducing drug she had been given in her coffee and tried to resist the procedure.
The doctor then asked the relatives of the woman, said to be aged “over 80”, to restrain her while she administered the lethal injection.
