1. Cost analysis of Tesla battery set commissioned at Australian solar power plant

50MWh capacity for an estimated life of 6 years (=2200 cycles) provides 50MWh×2200 = 110 GWh.
The battery should not cost more than
110GWh×(20c/kWh) = 22M (AUD)
If it costs more than 22 Million Dollars then it is not viable as the cost of the battery alone is twice the wholesale price of electricity from coal.
If it costs less than 5 Million then it may be the way for the future (provided there is no new environment problems cause by lithium ion batteries).
The actual cost of the experimental set of batteries (excluding the generation cost using solar panels or wind turbines) is about 50 million dollars, that is about four times the cost of wholesale electricity from current non-green generators.
2. Are 2200 cycles at full-charged capacity an over-estimation?
The estimate of a 6 years life for a Lithium Ion battery is an over-estimation (? ) of its actual life. Any such actual battery may last 6 years or even longer but its capacity steadily declines over time to about 1/2 of initial capacity after 3 years, as has been seen with the common experience on laptops and smart phones powered by Lithium Ion batteries.
3. Application of battery systems to home installations.
The advertised price for a 10kW battery system for home use is AUD 10,000 with another AUD 10,000 subsidization by the Australian State of Victoria. (Home owner pays 10000+2700 AUD to have both a battery and a Solar Photo-Voltaic System, Victoria State pays the rest) [3-7]. There is no mention of the capacity of the battery! However, we can suppose that a very small battery capacity of 10kWh for frugal use is supplied in the package.
10kWh capacity for an estimated life of 6 years (=2200 cycles) provides 10kWh×2200 = 22 MWh
The battery should not cost more than
22MWh×(20c/kWh) = 4400 (AUD)
If it costs more than 4400 Dollars then it is not viable as the cost of the battery alone is twice the wholesale price of electricity from coal.
If it costs less than 1100 AUD then it may be the way for the future (provided there is no new environment problem caused by lithium ion batteries).
4. An un-publicized competing energy storage technology already exists.
Fortunately, there are currently un-publicized, non-gravy train technologies for grid scaled energy storage. One of them uses environment friendly liquid air [8,14].
