There is a hypnotizing drug scopolamine which also inhibits memory forming processes. It is being used by street scammers (or “robbers”, if robbery includes taking possessions using mind numbing drugs).

1. How does it work?

The perpetrator blows the powder or mist of the drug onto the face of his victim to numb the victim’s mind, then tell the victim to hand over his valuables. The drug also inhibits the formation of any new memory so the victim cannot remember the details of the events.

There is a massive amount of sensory data (transient memory) going to the brain to inform the body of possible threats and its own status. Only data subjected to attention for more than 1 minute of duration can be recorded as short term memory. Short term memory let people remember recent events unfolding around them. Scopolamine inhibits this memory forming process.

For example, if the drug was blown onto the face of the victim at 10:30. The victim would not remember anything after 10:30. It is worse than that: All transient, instantanous sensory data from 10:29 would not be recorded as short term memory since they have not been given the required minimum duration of 1 minute of attention. In effect, the victim will not remember anything since 10:29, a full 1 minute prior to the encounter.

Therefore the victim would not remember how and by whom he got robbed and cannot report the details of the event to his local police.

2. Where does it come from?

Scopolamine is a drug that comes from the plants Brugmansia. It is also known as “devil’s breath”.

Brugmansia plants have been used by Voodoo witchdoctors in several South American cultures as a treatment for unruly children, so that they might be admonished directly by their ancestors in the spirit world, and thereby become more compliant.

The active ingredient is Scopodolamine. The drug is made from the seeds of the borrachero tree. The Western World obtains it from Colombia. It comes as a fine white powder which is blown into the victim’s face or used to spike food and drinks, and renders people helpless within minutes.

All traces of scopolamine disappears from the bloodstream within four hours, meaning it often becomes untraceable as evidence of any crime.

Knowledge does spread out to the whole World. The drug has been used by scammers in Quito, Paris ( “dozens” of victims), etc… (https://www.theguardian.com/society/shortcuts/2015/sep/02/devils-breath-aka-scopolamine-can-it-really-zombify-you), London and also in Vietnam.

Local news papers in South Vietnam since earlier than 1960 had reported incidents that fit all current descriptions of those currently reported from South America. It is logical to think that the drug had been used by Vietnamese scammers well before it was known by Westerners. In those incidents local Vietnamese women market goers were hypnotized then told by strangers to hand over money and valuables in market places.

3. How perpetrators use it.

The active (odorless white powder) drug was made by schemers from the seeds, fruits and flowers of the plants following well kept secret, traditional recipes. Alternatively the schemers may choose to easily obtain liquid medical drug from pharmacies using improper prescriptions (It’s legal to buy scopolamine on line in UK from Chinese alibaba.com as it is not a controlled substance under the UK Misuse of Drugs Act.) and they have various ways to apply the vapor on the intended victim.

a/- One way is the perpetrator pretends to be a lost acquaintance of the victim and wanted to whisper some private conversation into the victim ears. The schemer then blow the vapor onto the face of the victim. Obviously the schemer must have used something as antidose on his own body in this scheme. All this is carried out within one minute.

After this the schemer tell the victim to hand over all valuables such as money, jewelries, vehicle and tell the victim to sit on the side of the street. The victim will regain his full consciousness after some 10 minutes.

b/- Another way is to put the perfume of scopolamine on a mobile phone. The schemer then pretend to have poor eyesight and ask the victim to help reading a tiny message on the screen of that phone. All this is carried out within one minute.

c/- Some terrible perpetrators befriend their victims for a while then blow the vapor and ask the victims to sign binding contracts giving them their properties, life-savings, etc… The one minute limit is irrelevant here.

d/- Some perpetrators use the drug to seduce and manipulate their rich, lonely foreigner victims.

4. How to avoid those mind druggers.

Do NOT allow anyone to get close to your head within your (stretched) arm length. Say to the stranger “Please keep away from me. You and me are strangers, there is no intimate conversation, please say clearly and loudly what you want”.

Be wary of any stranger wanting to put something closer than one arm length to your head.

Do not follow any stranger (however attractive she may be) to go to some unknown, secluded place.

Do not engage in conversation with strangers unless your group is much more numerous than their. This makes it impossible for scammers to hypnotize all your group at the same time.

Do not wear valuables when going out to susceptible places.

5. Places with most reported incidents.

Columbia and Ecuador:

Spain

At Costa Del Sol, two women were raped and they suspected their drink were spiked with this drug.
