#local government, #third level elected government,

It is time to abolish/restructure the wasteful, ridiculous third level “local governments”.

Third level elected (“local”) politicians are totally unnecessary, are aloof, mostly ignorant of their essential tasks (collecting Rubbish, maintaining local Roads, local facilities), are prone to corruption by Land Developpers, are pushy of irrelevant issues, and are mostly wasteful of tax money.

1. Where are local governments now? What have they done to help in this emergency?

They have mostly disappeared from the scene, are enjoying their “compulsory” shutdown. They are planning to embark on their oversea study trips funded by excessive taxes (called “local rates”) on residents.

2. “A friend in need is a friend indeed” and the conspicuous absence of local governments:

2a. When rationing was under consideration, local governments had contributed no solution. Local government should have distributed toilet paper rolls and essential food to their rate payers. They have the records of numbers of residents in each household.

In the last few weeks Public Health Emergency and lockdowns or partial lockdowns have been applied in many countries. Why haven’t Local Governments cooperated with respective State Governments to distribute food rations, hygiene supply rations, etc. Specifically why haven’t Local Governments printed and supplied ration cards and public place excercise rational cards so that households are assured of having their fair supplies of those items?

Even Italian Mafia and Brazilian Underworld have contributed to their local areas (https://survivaltricks.wordpress.com/2020/04/23/coronavirus-latin-american-crime-gangs-adapt-to-pandemic-bbc-news/).

2b. When local shops have had no experience in social distancing, local governments failed to turn up to organize it.

2c. Local governments have not contributed to any information campaign to slow down Covid-19 although they had been quite vocal in Climate Change and LGBTQ campaigns.

2d. Local governments have failed to actively lead by examples in cleaning and disinfecting public areas. Why haven’t Local Govrrnments installed the low cost contactless disinfectant dispensers at crowded public places?

3. Local elected politicians are entrenched in taking cuts in local real estate developments.

Presently local elected governments just try to extort money from residents to build their own empires. They pledge their loyalty not to the residents but to green ideology, to open border ideology that are all issues of State and National politics. Local governments need not to exist and should all be replaced by administrative officials of State Governments. While they are not yet abolished, it is now time to MANDATE that every of their yearly budgets needs approval by direct popular voting (over the internet) from residents.

It is their empire building attitude that leads to the proliferation of overcrowded ant-hill dwellings that facillitates pamdemics.

4. Local Governments are too big for residents to scrutize but too small for national news papers to make headlines.

So their non-transparency escapes the scrutiny of the nation and can breed corruption.

5. Local Governments only know how to work in good time and cannot share the burden in austere time

Local Governments take a huge amount of taxes on houses, shops and factories in English speaking countries. They are happily increasing their taxes even during economic hard times. Local elected representatives seem quite disconnected to the economic world of their constituents.

Local Governments spend those taxes on the “oversea study trips” by elected local representatives while it is obvious that the trips would be much more beneficial if yaken by the non-elected public servants working permanently for the Local Governments.

Local Governments are always quick in getting onto any fashionable bandwagons like making “feminist traffic signs”, making “transgenders inclusive toilets for schools”, teaching primary school children about “gender fluidity”, going “green” at all costs, proclaiming Climate Emergency, …

Now, in this time of Public Health Emergency caused by Covid-19, what are the Local Governments doing? Or have the Local Governments been revealed by this Public Health Emergency to be only an unnecessary waste of public money?

6. The wasteful records of third level elected representatives.

Local Governments were quick to have contractors handing out cheap (and nasty?) Compact Fluorescent Tubes to households and charged the Local Council budgets outrageous amounts of money (about $100 per household hand-out of two CF lights of $10 worth). It was a nice way for their connected contractors to do such lucrative contracts of handing out the CF lights! Local Governments were also quick to hang rainbow flags and banners supporting LGBTQ movements. Local Governments are always quick in getting onto any fashionable bandwagons like making “feminist traffic signs”, making “transgenders inclusive toilets for schools”, teaching primary school children about “gender fluidity”, going “green” at all costs, proclaiming Climate Emergency, …

7. We should abolish these wasteful Local Governments.

Their roles can be more efficiently fulfilled by officials of Second level elected (State) Governments.

Now, in this time of Public Health Emergency caused by Covid-19, have the Local Governments been revealed by this Public Health Emergency to be only an unnecessary waste of public money?

The benefit to having elected representatives is that they can be pulled into line by the public….But this seldom happens in council life, and when it does, it usually concerns a swimming pool.

It’s worth asking whether the council chambers could be substituted with a Swiss-like system that allows the public to challenge decisions if enough residents sign petitions opposing them.

“It is time that the City Of Maribyrnong put a hold on all non-urgent spending and undertook a whole of Council review of projects, expenditure (one off and ongoing), head count and to actively look for cost savings to reduce the financial burden on all ratepayers.”

“There are over 3 million ratepayers in Victoria.
it’s time they were properly represented…We lobby councils to be transparent and share all information possible with ratepayers. We seek to end the “secrecy” within many council operations. We demand less “confidential business” and more scrutiny of all council decisions, spending and outcomes”

The City of Casey, covering the outer southeastern suburbs, is one council to have caught the travel bug, spending $55,000 in jaunts to New York and China this year alone.

Maribyrnong Council is completely inept, a motlier crew you’d struggle to find in a day’s march. There has been a massive increase in the number of apartments and town houses in the last 5 years or so and Highpoint continues to expand, so rate revenue surely must have grown considerably, yet rates are through the roof and services have been cut.

The local council in Footscray, Melbourne asked the tradesmen to build new driveways. But they forgot to lower the curb to allow cars to drive smoothly on to the road.

the risk for corruption is probably much greater at the local level, where scrutiny is scant and developers are circling, than in federal politics.

Debbie Robinson explains why we must get rid of the third and most obsolete level of government. Local councils are increasingly abused by divisive fringe groups and social justice warriors as political kindergartens, to the detriment of ratepayers and the wider community.

There is nothing councils do which could not be done by the private sector or hived off to the states under an expanded planning, environment, transport and community services department.
