In contrast to the applauded ban by EU on single use plastic items [1, 2], actions by Australian Greenies have created chaos and brought more harm than good to Australian environment.

1. Promoting Compact Fluorescent Lights with no concern for their mercury contents.

In 2007, Maribyrnong (Footscray) Council of the Australian State of Victoria sent out their (luckily? timely registered) door knock bulb replacers to replace 2 incandescent bulbs with CF Lights for free for each consenting household. Door knock bulb replacers are paid around AUD 100/2 bulb replacements. The 2 bulbs costs around AUD 6 each and could have been bought and inserted by the house holders themselves.

The trick of the scheme is the replacements are paid for by the Council from the property taxes on ALL households.

Good earning for those (luckily? timely registered) door knock bulb replacement persons !

Worse things to come is the householders have not been informed that CFL has mercury contents but neither the sellers nor the Local Councils provide easily accessed disposal bins for those CF Lights.

The result is Australian household wastes now have MERCURY contents.

2. Polluting construction wastes with (glass wool) pink batts.

In 2007, Prime Minister K. Rudd allowed (luckily? timely registered) door knock insulation installer to install pink batts on ceiling for insulation for free for each consenting household. Door knock installers are paid around AUD 6000/ household.

The batts cost fractions of AUD.6000 and could have been bought and installed by more responsible installers hired by the house holders.

The trick of the scheme is the replacements are paid for by the Federal Government from the tax on ALL taxpayers.

Good earning for those (luckily? timely registered) door knock insulation installers !

It is a sorry story for those installers who jumped quite late onto the gravy train.

We should feel sorry for the fire victims of this installation scheme.

Those houses with sloppy installation need reworks and may have their useful lives shortened. That is not very green.

3. Banning plastic shopping bags in Australia causing more plastic dumping than necessary.

The public will certainly support conservation measures. However the current ban on thin plastic shopping bags may be misguided and untimely. Many people may have to suspect that the ban is only a well camouflaged move for supermarkets to make more money through the introduction and the sale of garbage bin liner bags (Bags of about the size of banned shopping bags are now selling at 5c each!). Garbage bins will be unhygienic if garbage is not contained either in small individual air tight bags (that had been the established final use for thin plastic shopping bags) or in large size thick air tight bags [9].

For economic sake, thick garbage bin liners sell better than thin bin liners as they don’t get torn unexpectedly. The bins get emptied weekly whether they are full or not.

The weight of single used garbage lining plastic bags is more than the sum of the weights of shopping bags they replace !

4. Creating the illusion that most plastic will be recycled.

This illusion of the half baked plans from greenies has given a false absolution to the addicts of single used plastic items.

Many plastic items of dubious utility values such as polystyrene foam for packaging are pushed down consumers throats after they have been stamped with the recyclable (by whom, where?) triangular stamps.

There is a proliferation of plastic bottles, drink straws, cups, plastic lids, utensil, container-dis players for fruits… Even pairs of garlic bulbs are now also sold in plastic display containers in supermarkets in Melbourne !

5. Installing solar panels for the rich with money from the poor.

This scheme by many state governments (including Victoria) has brought current Australian household electricity to AUD 0.20/kWh (or USD 0.14/kWh) with a connection fee of AUD 0.80/day (USD 0.57/day). The cost per kWh is to increase by 5 to 10% for the next few years.

The Australian government should NOT have picked the winner and should let people choose WHEN to buy photovoltaic panels.

Many household now cannot afford electricity from the grid and has to rely on own solar panel PLUS a 2000W petrol electric generator (sold at AUD 200 with 1 year warranty). Using this plan makes a saving on the grid connection fees.

Those people worked out that the cost of operating their own on site photovoltaic panels Plus the generator is much less than AUD 0.80/day just to connect to the grid.

This exercise drained Australian Treasure.

(The price of solar electricity consists of the generation cost (The average price across Australian capital cities for a 5kW system is $5100 from plus storage cost (using Li-Ion batteries):

That means even at the price of ‎6.6kw for $2999 fully installed (from,, consumer only get 6.6kWh*20,000 = 132,000kWh of electricity if the battery can give an equivalence of 6 years of service at that full capacity.

So the cost of only storing 1kWh of renewable electricity is already $2999/132,000kWh = $0.0227/kWh

If the whole life of the battery can only supply half of 20000 full charges, then the storage price double. That is if the battery gives an equivalence of only 10,000 full charge (2.5 years of service at full capacity) then the storage cost would be $0.045/kWh.

On top of that there are electricity generation cost, maintenance cost and insurance cost of (Insurance against fire risk is not cheap) the highly inflammable Li-Ion batteries in the house.

We also should note that Li-Ion batteries hazardous and are not allowed to be transported on passenger air-crafts. Fire Brigades also recommend consumers to recharge their devices using Li-Ion batteries ONLY WHILE THEY ARE STAYING AT HOME, watching the devices.

Maintenance cost may or may not be cheap but disposal cost of Li-Ion batteries is still a wild unknown for the consideration.)

Certificate is a plan to guarantee purchase from Solar panel owner the right to sell to network at a price of $40 /MWh, or $.04/kWh from installation time to 2030 (?). Network must collect money from all users to subsidize the scheme.

Register sellers receive government subsidies of 50% of total installation but cannot take off the panels without electricity suppliers’ approval.)

6. Throttling Australian Solar Hot Water industry.

Consider this simple physical fact: Each square meter of area on Australian rooftops receives at noon 700W of solar radiation. If this energy is used for solar hot water heating then the energy capture will be 700W×(system efficiency of #0.9). On the other hand if this energy is used for solar photovoltaic generation then the energy capture will be 700W×(system efficiency of #0.17). The ratio of available heating energy to available photovoltaic energy is more than 4 times.

The capture of energy and storage of hot potable water or of hot heating (non-potable) water are simple, cheap and is within the capability of Australian industry [12, 13]. On the other hand, solar panels had to be imported from China and storing electricity at domestic scale is still uneconomical. In Saigon (at latitude of 10 degree in Vietnam), the saving in the heating cost of hot water by Vietnamese made Solar Hot Water System actually pays back all installation costs in two year! Even a transferring this technology from Vietnam to Australia would make Solar Hot Water Systems with pay back periods of no more than 4 years, a much better solution than installing photovoltaic solar systems with Chinese panels with more than 10 years (or currently 6 years?) pay back periods (depending on how early you bought the panels) and involving imported main components, more capitals, more roof complexity, more maintenance, more risks (with respect to hail storms).

The actual Vietnamese system has 2 square meters of panel/tubes for absorption of solar radiation, 250L tank for storage of heated water. After 8 hours of operation the temperature of its water can reach 90 degree C. The all up cost for the system is 8,500,000VND. Everyday it can produces 250L of hot water, from a captured heat of 10kWh or a cost of 20000VND in saved electricity. It needs 425 sunny days to pay back its all up cost.

7. Installing Liquefied Gas conversion kits on vehicles.

Greenies force the subsidization for installing conversion kits [14, 15] on Australia vehicles. Many of the conversions are done on old cars nearing their end of usability and are worth much more than street values of the cars so that the cars can be sold to scrap yards and someone can cannibalize the kits!

After many cars have been converted, the government at the time quietly sold most of Liquefied Gas to China, creating a shortage of liquefied gas (even for electric generators) and Liquefied Gas for motorists has then lost much of its economic advantage.

This exercise drained Australian Treasure.

8. Conclusion.

After joining one protest for environmental causes, Australian Greenies usually go joining another one to protest against any immigration control (necessary for controlling population growth) by Australia!
